Here is a synopsis of some of the upcoming SOLAS requirements:

• ISPS (International Ship and Port Facility Security Code) – required compliance by July 1, 2004.  Since approval, external audit, and implementation will take several months, it is recommended that the SSP and SSA (Shipboard Security Plan and Shipboard Security Assessment) be submitted early.
   

• Ship’s Security Alert System – compliance by July 2004
   

• VDR (Voyage Data Recorder – Marine “black box”) – first timetable to be implemented is by Jan 2004
   

• Sprinkler system – applicable Oct 1, 2005 for all passenger ships – calls for accommodation, service spaces, stairway enclosures, corridors, to be provided with sprinklers
   

• CSR (Continuous Synopsis Record) – intended to provide an onboard record of the ship’s history – by July 1, 2004
